Announcements:

The schedule of upcoming practices and club races is listed below. However, club members who are not racing could always get together on their own for a training run.

Winter Schedule:

This winter, PRMH Running Club will offer three training options:

1. Indoor track workouts
2. Early morning runs on weekdays
3. Sunday group runs

Each club member should choose the option(s) which best fit your training and racing goals for the winter. You also need to consider which options also fit well with the logistics of your “real life” commitments. If you are unsure what will work best for you, contact Coach Bob Rothenberg at arothenberg2@cox.net Other club members who ran through last winter are also a good resource. I have listed below more information on each option:

Indoor track workouts:

On November 3rd, Coach Bob Rothenberg will begin holding indoor track workouts for interested club members. You do not have to be fast, nor do you need prior experience on the indoor track. You just have to be committed to coming consistently. Those of us who ran the indoor workouts last year greatly benefited from Bob’s expertise.

We will meet on Mondays and Thursdays at Brown’s indoor track, which is in the Olney-Margolis Athletic Center (OMAC). Bob will organize the workouts into 3 parts: warm-up and drills (30 minutes); interval running (30-40 minutes); cool down and strength drills (15 minutes). The total workout will take no more than 75 minutes. Bob will offer two starting times: 6:00am (ending by 7:15) and 7:00am (ending by 8:15). Whichever starting time you choose, it is absolutely essential that you be ready to go on time, since most others in your group have to be at work on time.

This is located toward the back of the athletic complex on the corner of Hope St and Lloyd Ave in Providence. In order to use the indoor track, you will need to purchase an athletic pass. A couple of options are to purchase a three-month pass, which will give you access to Brown athletic facilities for three months from the date of purchase. If you buy this after Nov 1st, it will get you into the track through the end of January. Another possibility is to purchase a day pass each time you come, but these can add up over time. Information on passes is at http://www.brown.edu/Athletics/Recsports/membership.html (Note that the senior discount starts at age 55.)

In theory, parking at the OMAC requires a parking pass, which can be purchased for an additional fee at Brown Campus Police office on Charlesfield St. However, only a few of us have ever been ticketed, and it was usually later in the day. Also, in the early morning, there is still lots of on-street parking available. Where to park is a call that you will have to make for yourself.

Weekday runs:

Joe Macedo has offered to be the practice coordinator for club members who would prefer to do early morning distance runs all winter. These runs are early enough for most people to still get to work on time. Anyone interested should contact Joe directly at jmacedo@cox.net

Saturday group runs:

The weekend group runs will continue through the winter. The runs will be on Saturdays at 8:00 AM starting at the Edge Cafe, in Providence.

Finally, if you have a tough time getting up in the morning, check out the Sonic Boom alarm clock at http://www.marilynelectronics.com/Sonic-Boom-Analog-Alarm-Clock-p/sa-sba475ss.htm I was sleeping through three conventional alarms, until I recently bought this clock. Now I wake up five minutes before the alarm goes off, because I am terrified of the alarm! (-:

Hope to see you throughout the winter. Don’t hesitate to contact Bob, me or any other club member if you have questions about winter running. Remember, it is much easier to keep going through the tough winter months when you are training with friends.

Calling all Chefs:

The Ronald McDonald House is giving us the opportunity to cook for the families that are staying there.  This is becoming the new hot activity for groups and business and since we run with their name on our backs we should jump at the chance to participate in this.

The way it works is groups of us will work together once a month to create a menu, purchase the food and prepare the meal (sounds like a reality TV challenge).  You can cook some of it before you get the house and finish it off there.

Send me a note if you are interested and I'll start grouping teams up, smacedo@cox.net.  The first cooking fiesta would be in April.

Get your wooden spoons ready!
